Topic: The Changing Identity of Software Engineers in the Age of AI

AI development tools now generate features, tests, refactors, and applications from natural language. These assistants increase productivity by automating routine work. However, humans still manage core architecture, correctness, and maintenance. AI excels at pattern-based tasks but lacks system insight and accountability; it aids rather than replaces engineers. While opinions vary on whether AI elevates or commoditizes the field, there is consensus: AI will transform—rather than erase—software engineering’s identity and practices.
